So often, I hear the same sentiments from coaching clients.
“I’m running on empty.”
“I have zero time to think about anything except what’s coming next. I feel like I’m constantly planning, dodging, problem-solving, and moving.”
“I have everything I thought I wanted—but I’m miserable.”
If these comments ring true or if you feel like you're always giving but never receiving, you’re not alone. It's a feeling many of us have experienced. But there's a fine line between dedication and over-sacrifice.
How do you know when you've crossed it? Here are seven telltale signs that you’re likely sacrificing too much for work.
1. You're Always Tired
We all have those days where we feel a little more exhausted than usual. But if you're consistently feeling drained, even after a good night's sleep or a relaxing weekend, it might be time to take a closer look at the energy you’re putting out, versus taking in. Chronic fatigue is often a sign that you're overextending yourself. Your body and mind are sending you a clear message: they need a break.
2. Your Personal Relationships Are Suffering
Have you missed yet another family dinner or your best friend's birthday party because of work? Perhaps your patience with those closest to you has worn away to almost nothing. When your job starts encroaching on your personal life to the point where your relationships are strained, it's a red flag. Your loved ones are your support system and neglecting them can lead to additional tension to manage, as well as feelings of isolation and loneliness.
3. You're Always Connected
In today's digital age, it's easy to stay plugged in 24/7. But if you find yourself constantly checking emails, taking calls, or thinking about work outside of office hours, it's a sign that you're in a state of over-control. Without regular periods of disconnection and personal restoration, you’re flirting with burnout. Also, be careful not to fool yourself with “breaks” that include only the television and mindless doomscrolling. Both are forms of hypnosis that don’t actually allow you to mentally rest. This constant connection can prevent you from fully engaging in your own inner rest and renewal, leading to additional stress, interrupted sleep, and mounting consequences.
4. You Feel Guilty When You're Not Working
Do you feel a pang of guilt every time you take a break or spend time doing something you enjoy? Or perhaps you feel your anxiety increasing simply because your time isn’t “productive” in the same way that it is most of the time. This guilt and anxiety are strong indicators that you're sacrificing too much for work. It's essential to remember that downtime is not only okay but necessary for your mental and physical health. You're more than just your job.
5. Your Health Is Declining
Stress can manifest in various physical symptoms, from headaches and stomach issues to more severe conditions like heart disease. If you've noticed a decline in your health and can't pinpoint a cause, it might be time to evaluate your work habits. Your health should always be a priority, and no job is worth sacrificing it.
6. You're Not Enjoying Your Hobbies Anymore
What hobbies and activities used to bring you joy? Do you still have hobbies and activities outside of work? Or have they fallen by the wayside because of work? Losing interest in hobbies—or having no hobbies at all—can be a sign that you're too consumed by your job. Hobbies—or regularly scheduled “fun moments” as defined by only YOU— are vital for balance and fulfillment. They provide a necessary outlet for stress and a way to connect with yourself at your core.
7. You're Experiencing Burnout
Burnout is more than just feeling tired or stressed. It's a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. If you're feeling detached, overwhelmed, or unable to meet constant demands, you might be experiencing burnout. Recognizing the signs early is crucial for taking steps to recover and prevent further damage.
What Can You Do?
If any of these signs resonate with you, it's time to reassess your approach to work and life. Here are a few strategies to help you regain control:
Take it to Heart
Remember, your work is just one part of your life. It's essential, yes, but it's not everything. By recognizing the signs of over-sacrifice and taking proactive steps to address them, you can achieve a healthier, more balanced life.
You deserve to thrive both at work and at home.
Take a moment today to check in with yourself. Are you sacrificing too much for work? If the answer is yes, it's time to make a change. Your well-being is worth it.
